The UAS4STEM program is an exciting and educational initiative designed to inspire young minds to explore the world of drone engineering and aeronautics. Sponsored by the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), this program provides students with the opportunity to work together as a team, develop technical skills, and compete in national drone competitions.
The Scio Flyers are committed to fostering a collaborative learning environment where students can thrive and have entered this year's competition and are actively preparing for the 2026 UAS4STEM Drone Engineering Challenge.
We welcome students, age 11 to 19, of all experience levels to join our team. Whether you’re a seasoned coder or new to the world of drones, the program is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop new skills, and make lasting friendships. Our current team consists of a handful of our younger members and we are fortunate to have also recruited a few local high school students. This combination provides a nice mix of hands-on aviation experience and high school-level science education.
The program is designed to teach students the fundamentals of drone technology and aeronautics.
Participants will learn about:
Drone assembly and maintenance
Flight dynamics and control systems
Safety protocols and regulations
Programming and coding for autonomous flight
Teamwork and project management
The competition consists of two stages:
Virtual Preliminary Competition:
April 14 – 29, 2026
Championship Competition (by invitation): July 20-22, 2026 at AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin
October 5, 2025, 1:00 pm: Kickoff Meeting
Through the end of December:
Orientation, Ground School, Safety Training, Fundraising
January/February:
Drone kit arrives, start the build, configure PC to be used as ground station, etc.
Flight Readiness Review (FRR), test flights
March:
